About Fort Inadiye (Fortezza)
Currently, Fortezza is a suburb of Heraklion, situated on a high hill adjacent to the Venizelion general hospital. Its strategic location on the hill made it an ideal spot for a fortress, as indicated by its Italian name, which translates to “fortress.” When the Turks laid siege to Candia, they knew it would be a long and drawn-out process. As a result, they chose to construct a fortress on Fortezza hill to better monitor their movements and continue the siege on Candia.
The Turks called the fort Inadiye, or New Fortress, while the Venetians referred to it as Nuova Candia. It served as the Turkish headquarters, from where they orchestrated their war against the Venetians and the Cretans.
One of the Turks’ initial moves was to cut off the city’s water supply by damaging the pipeline that transported water from the Morozini aqueduct, which passed near Fortezza. Unfortunately, almost nothing remains of the Fortezza fort today, as it was entirely demolished during residential construction.
