About Drapanos Lighthouse
Located 26km east of Chania and 2km north of Kokkino Horio, the Cape Drapano lighthouse is surrounded by some of Crete’s most incredible caves, including the popular scuba diving destination, the submarine Cave of the Elephants.
Constructed in 1864 by the French Company of Lighthouses, the lighthouse remains in good condition at an elevation of 50m on the brink of a vertical cliff. The octagonal-shaped tower stands at 7m tall, with a stone guard’s house situated nearby.
In 1912, the Drapano lighthouse became part of the Greek lighthouse network, like other lighthouses in Crete. It was later destroyed by the Germans and subsequently rebuilt in 1948. To access the lighthouse, take the passable road from Kokkino Horio.
