About Chania Chemistry Museum
The Chania Chemistry Museum showcases the history of Greece’s first Chemical Laboratory, which was established in Chania. Located on the 2nd floor of the General Chemical Laboratory of Chania, the museum was founded in 1900 by the Cretan State and chemist Dr. Ioannis Vamvakas to oversee public health. Unfortunately, the original workshop was destroyed by bombing in 1941, but the museum now displays the remaining artifacts from that time.
Research conducted at this laboratory led to significant publications, provided support for health authorities, helped combat malaria, and produced a chemistry book in 1913. This book was the first of its kind and remained popular among Greek chemists for many years.
Included in the book are detailed accounts of various studies and cases, such as the examination of imported flour from Marseille that was deemed unfit for bread production and later used for animal feed, as well as analyses of camel butter, ostrich fat, and a meteorite that fell in Crete.
Visitors can explore the Chemistry Museum during regular working hours. For group visits, it is recommended to contact the museum in advance to make arrangements.
