Above the beach of Gerontolakkos, at the position Farmakokefalo, archaeologist P. Papadakis uncovered the remnants of the Hellenistic city Ambelos in 1984. Excavations exposed a flourishing city with impressive walls, houses, and distinct roads.

Founded in the 5th century BC, Ambelos served as a trading hub for the Western Mediterranean. The picturesque church of Saint Nicholas, constructed in 1895, dominates the center of the site.
