New growth appears in Preveli's fire-damaged palm forest, forestry officials say

New green shoots have appeared on palm trees inside the fire-damaged Preveli palm forest in southern Rethymno, weeks after a wildfire on July 29 burned large parts of the area, according to officials from the Crete Forest Policy Application Inspectorate.

The wildfire caused significant damage across southern Rethymno, including the wider area of the Preveli palm forest. Despite the extensive destruction, some palm trees found within the burned zone are now showing new growth, with small green shoots emerging among the visible signs of the fire.

The images were recorded on Tuesday during a site inspection carried out by officials from the Crete Forest Policy Application Inspectorate, who described the new growth as an encouraging early sign for the area’s recovery.

Landscape still shows fire damage

Officials noted that the landscape still bears clear marks of the fire, even as the new vegetation begins to appear. The wildfire risk has remained a recurring concern across Crete this summer, with authorities repeatedly placing the island under a “Red Code” alert as conditions reached very high danger levels in the weeks before and after the Preveli fire.

Regional fire warnings have also extended beyond Crete, with authorities citing “Hot-Dry-Windy” conditions affecting multiple regions, including Crete, in the days surrounding the incident.

According to the officials who conducted the inspection, the appearance of new vegetation does not erase the extent of the damage but does offer an initial indication that the ecosystem has begun its own process of regeneration.
