VOAK closes Agios Nikolaos–Neapoli section for two days over bridge safety works

Traffic on the Northern Road Axis of Crete (VOAK) will be temporarily suspended between Agios Nikolaos and Neapoli for two days this week due to safety works near the Xiropotamos bridge, according to an announcement covered by CretaOne.

The closure will take place at the Xiropotamos bridge, at kilometer point 8+300 of the project, on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, and Thursday, August 27, 2026, each time from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Reason for the closure

According to the announcement, the works are needed because of emergency geotechnical conditions in the area where excavation work is under way. Crews will remove unstable rock masses near the bridge to eliminate safety risks along the route.

Traffic detours during the closure

During the two closure windows, small vehicles and buses travelling from Neapoli toward Agios Nikolaos will be diverted via the Old National Road, then Lakonia, and the Kritsa junction before reaching Agios Nikolaos.

Vehicles travelling in the opposite direction, from Agios Nikolaos toward Neapoli, will use the Old National Road exclusively for the duration of the works.

Heavy vehicles will continue to use the existing VOAK route, with the road periodically closed for work and reopened at intervals throughout the day, the announcement said. Travelers planning trips along this stretch, including those who rent a car in Crete, should factor in the detours and possible delays on the affected dates.
